The surgeons at The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy specialize in minimally invasive surgical procedures and also offer single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for some conditions.
Abdominal Adhesions
Laparoscopic surgery may be helpful both diagnostically and therapeutically for chronic abdominal pain due to adhesions or undetected hernias.
Colon
Research studies have shown the benefits of laparoscopic colon resection. The removal of cancers, polyps, and diverticulitis now most always can be approached laparoscopically. Single incision laparoscopic surgery is an option for some colon resections.
Gallbladder/Gallstones
Laparoscopic gallbladder removal is the most commonly employed minimally invasive technique. This is an outpatient procedure that relieves gallstone problems. The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy was one of the first centers in the country to perform single-incision gallbladder surgery.
GERD/Heartburn/Hiatal Hernia
The surgical procedure for acid reflux disease (GERD), a Nissen fundoplication, often is preferred in younger patients who wish to avoid chronic medical therapy, in patients with continued symptoms despite medications, and in patients with Barrett’s Esophagus. Surgery is aimed at allowing patients to stop medication and renders them free of heartburn.
Hernia
Most abdominal hernias may be repaired laparoscopically. This approach is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to open repair due to less post-operative pain and faster recovery. Some hernias even have a lower risk of recurring if repaired laparoscopically.
Spleen and Adrenal Tumors
Most surgical intervention for diseases of the spleen and adrenal glands may be performed laparoscopically.
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Mercy is one of the first centers in the country to perform single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). It is used for a variety of abdominal surgeries including gallbladder removal and colon resections. The technique requires a single incision, usually within the belly button, as opposed to the traditional three to four incisions. Typically, there is no visible scarring and a faster recovery. Dr. Swope, one of the first physicians to offer SILS, has an advanced level of training and teaches other physicians the innovative technique. View animated demonstration of SILS.
